Response to Ex Post Facto Ethics Free Essays

The record, â€Å"Ex Post Facto Ethics† by Stanley Schmidt uncovers numerous significant focuses to our general public. He focuses on the way that students of history today are Judging and disapproving of what significant authentic figures thought and followed up on in their time. In spite of the fact that his article was quite certain in models his speculation of society being a uniform mass is his own tricky case of â€Å"Ex Post Facto Ethics†. We will compose a custom exposition test on Reaction to Ex Post Facto Ethics or then again any comparative subject just for you Request Now It likewise end up being deceptive in its contention about condemning a lot after the issue has passed. Schmidt focuses on the way that individuals in our current day society are continually denouncing upon our precursors for infringement of â€Å"ex post facto moral laws† when, in all actuality, the general acknowledged principles and qualities are changing even right now. Subsequently, we don't see how these individuals of history thought, felt, as well as accepted what was correct or wrong. As such, we are ignorant of the incredible effect that the social setting of their period had on fundamental ethical quality. It is anything but difficult to make Judgment of other peoples’ activities despite our own degrees of what is correct and what's going on in our eyes. To the majority of us now, the observation and comprehension of essential good standards vary radically from the recognition and comprehension of fundamental good standards of the antiquated adherents, chronicled figures, or the essential establisher of our nation. For instance, the article clarifies how understudies and instructors rail â€Å"against George Washington and Thomas Jefferson since they kept slaves†. The establisher of our nation had originated from Europe, where it was underestimated to have slaves; it made no mischief or foul anybody however the slaves themselves. The slaves were just viewed as property). In any case, that is the place the debate starts: today, subjugation is shameless, merciless, and inadmissible. The article expresses that, â€Å"We can Judge the quality and significance of their [people of the past] commitments to understanding the universe just as far as what they did with the information accessible to them. † When Schmidt says this, he is alluding to what Isaac Newton thought and accepted he knew in his time about Physics. Thus, Schmidt suggested that we can't Judge dependent on what we now, however on what they knew at that point. In AP Euro, there are on many occasions where one, as an individual from our general public, finds out about occasions, convictions, customs, and so forth , that are presently viewed as shameless and unaccepted by society. For example, in the early ages and since the commencement of Europe, ladies were viewed as property. They were exchanged, sold, assaulted, and murdered with no discipline at all; it was Just the typical method to respond towards ladies. Today, we learn, in history class, of these activities done by chronicled figures and our first response is, â€Å"What would they say they were thinking? R â€Å"How would they be able to do such a thing,† however in all truly, that is Just the style of life they lived in at that point. Knowing and appreciating these perspectives assume a key job in understanding the history that have driven society to where it is today. For this equivalent explanation, the teacher needed us to peruse this article. It not just delineates ho w the viewpoint and comprehension of fundamental good standards develop after some time, yet additionally stresses the way that we can't Judge the activities of the individuals of the past dependent on our own point of view and comprehension. We will utilize this comprehension of the past during the time in class. Step by step instructions to refer to Response to Ex Post Facto Ethics, Papers

How to Write a Resume When Youre Just Out of College

How to Write a Resume When Youre Just Out of College I was there quite recently Fresh out of college: mum and dad were so proud, I was happy, life was good.Unfortunately, in my case this blessed state lasted for about five minutes.I soon realized that my college education took approximately four years of my life, that I need to find a job and that I have absolutely no idea how to do this.Don’t get me wrong… I knew what I should be doing, but for some reason, I found every step of this process extremely exhausting and even, depressive.Resume drafting turned out to be a complete challenge but not for reasons you’ll probably think of intuitively…For me, the hardest part was to let go of my idea of a resume and how it should look like.Namely, I believed that a resume with no relevant work experience is not a resume at all! So, I knew I needed a resume but couldn’t get myself to ignore this annoying voice telling me that I do not have anything relevant to put there.I seriously didn’t know where to start but I knew there must be a solution! So, I did what any other average person in the 21st century would do… I googled this situation and tried to find answers for myself and my jobless misery. As you may presume, I found many hacks, tips and tricks one can use to draft a good resume even if lacking work experience.Having collected much of this wisdom, I decided to try to sum up some of those advices I myself found most useful or interesting…Therefore, bear with me and do not despair! Definitely do not hate yourself for “throwing away” 3-5 years on your college education. You didn’t “throw away” anything and nothing is lost. You simply need to learn to…WORK AROUND THE LACK OF EXPERIENCE!Easier said than done. You are probably thinking: what is there to work around?I totally understand. I thought the exact same thing while reading similar advices. But then I started wondering… What was I doing for the past couple of years if not investing into myself? I wasn’t working full time, that is true.Ho wever, I wasn’t having the time of my life either… I was studying like crazy, doing major and elective courses, trying to squeeze in sport and languages and fun was really at the bottom of my endless ‘to-do list’.And thinking about all of this made me realize: I was, in fact, working during my college years. I was working on myself while obtaining priceless education. I was developing useful skills and valuable abilities and economically speaking, was investing into myself. The idea behind it all was to utilize the obtained knowledge on the job market when the time comes and while studying, I never got the impression I was wasting my time. So, this was a first step towards the shift in a perspective…Understanding that I really wasn’t fooling around or wasting anything. The other thing which helped me change my perspective was imagining my resume without my education section.I imagined work experience on that place, but the work experience I could have obtained solely with H igh school was not really something I would be aiming at long term.I already had a few part-time jobs of this kind, but it was really my education that had the biggest significance on my resume. This made my proud and partially returned my self-confidence. And that is how I actually realized what it means to work around your lack of experience.Don’t focus on it! Don’t insist on what’s missing, highlight assets you already have.Focus on your strengths. And definitely, try to stay confident!Tell the world (and recruiters) what you have been doing for the past couple of years. Not everyone decides to sacrifice their time, energy and free time to commit to studying. Therefore, you will want to elaborate on your sense of commitment but also everything you have learned during this time. You are unique and worthy, but it is only after you realize it and learn how to market your assets, you can hope for others to realize this as well. So, let me help you to a successful career start with a set of helpful tipps… BEGINNING OF A RESUME: RESUME SUMMARY OR RESUME OBJECTIVE The first inevitable question is: How do I begin? What do I write after personal information section (you always need this one)?Resume summary or resume objective. Both are equally good and/or useful, the important question is: which one works better for you?Resume summary is a short summary of your background, most important strengths and simply, a way to explain what you can offer to the employer. A good summary should not be more than 5 sentences and it can also be presented in a form of bullet points as well, e.g.: “An experienced English translator with over 10 years of experience. Motivated, inter-cultural and flexible. Excited for new challenges and opportunities, especially interested in alternative learning methods.”A resume objective is a way to convince an employer/s you know what you want in your career. It should be a clear, structured message, e.g.: “An experienced English transla tor with over 10 years of experience, actively searching for opportunities in international corporations.”If written well, both resume and objective, can and should spark recruiter’s attention and lure him/her to take a closer look at your application. If you have a really clear career perspective or you know exactly what you want, a career objective may be better suited for you. Also, it may be better suited for beginners because it states what you want or are aiming at and is not stressing out your prior achievements/experience.Naturally, it is not written in stone that a career resume must focus on ones’ professional achievements. It can be a subtle way to stress out some of your soft-skills and personal qualities. Some people like to use a quote which describes them well instead of a conventional resume summary… Personally, this doesn’t work for me as I don’t feel comfortable or professional quoting other people on my resume.Nevertheless, I did come across a few example s where this kind of beginning made a truly strong impression and was very successful with recruiters. Therefore, there are no strict rules. You should decide what works better for you by taking your personality and a concrete job application into consideration… Test a few options out and simply decide what you like best!ORDER: EDUCATION FIRST, PRIOR EXPERIENCE SECONDYour resume should focus on stressing out your most important achievements. For highly skilled professionals with 20+ years of experience, prior work experience is, naturally, more valuable than their university education. The education was, of course, a necessary step but since they already got there where they are now, a future company will be much more interested to hear about what they actually did, not studied. And this is exactly why they put their work experience section first and elaborate on that in a lot more detail than their education (except in certain very specific cases: researchers, PhD candidates etc.).In your case, being a fresh-out-of-college candidate, you won’t have any relevant work experience to elaborate on.Your biggest asset is your education! And this is by no means a bad thing.Everybody must start somewhere and being a holder of an academic title is already a huge thing. For this reason, you will want a recruiter to pay attention to your education, rather than your work experience. How will you do this?Well, first of all, you will put it higher on your resume. So, the next section following resume objection or summary will be the education section. And yes, this is perfectly fine and in fact, advisable for juniors, recent graduates and/or students. With time, this order may and will change. The more experience you gain, the more important your experience section will be and at one point, you will only mention your education in a few short bullet points, below the work experience section.Nevertheless, for now, you will want to follow this order: education first, experience se cond.EDUCATIONAL FOCUS INSTEAD OF WORK EXPERIENCE FOCUSWhen speaking of education, we are not done with this topic just yetYou now know that you can place focus on your education by putting it higher on a resume, but you can additionally highlight it by adding more details and by elaborating your achievements thoroughly.Try looking at it this way: space on your resume is limited, you need to use it wisely. Therefore, you will focus only on things that look good for you. Here are a few things you can consider mentioning:Include your majors and electives, especially those courses which could be useful for the job you are applying for. Naturally, you shouldn’t list all courses you ever took and passed but you should be able to distinct a few specific employer would find useful or interesting. You can mention interesting courses you took during your studies: Art courses, languages, sport team memberships… Something that can draw attention to your resume. If you had a scholarship, you c an put that in your resume as well. And especially if a scholarship depended on high performance in a specific field (grades, sports etc.).You can and should mention any volunteering work or membership in college organizations. Recruiters tend to find these very interesting. This shows that you have interests, organizational skills and dedication which is directed not only towards books and good grades. When it comes to grades average, opinions are divided. Some say you should disclose it, others that you shouldn’t. Basically, if you feel very confident about your average, I don’t see a reason why you shouldn’t disclose it.Personally, I always considered my average good but not excellent which is why I only mentioned that I graduated with honors and skipped the exact numbers.Furthermore, if you are applying in different countries or places where you aren’t sure they will understand how good or bad your grades average is, it may be simpler to just skip this information. Finally : When in doubt whether an information is worth sharing, you may consider asking a skilled professional you know or a friend with more experience in this field to check your resume. A fresh perspective can’t hurt!In any event, do make sure to stress out how valuable your education was, everything you learned and highlight anything that could present you as more qualified or skilled (in employer’s view).ELABORATE PRIOR EXPERIENCE (EVEN IF IT SEEMS IRRELEVANT)I have no work experience. This is such a common phrase, right? I (regularly) used it for quite a while after my graduation. However, this phrase is rarely completely true…And I will explain why in a minute.Part-time jobs and jobs unrelated to your studies can be a valuable experience as well. They may not sound fancy and may seem irrelevant to you now but try looking at it from a different perspective.A job at a bar or a coffee shop shows dedication, patience, people and communication skills.A job in McDonalds shows the sam e, plus, a very stress-resistant personality and the ability to react quickly. And don’t even get me started about tutoring jobs or part-time jobs on campus. The name of the institution is already sufficient to boost your profile. Most importantly, all jobs you ever held demonstrate two remarkable qualities: Consciousness and readiness to work. And trust me, employers do appreciate these. You may think it is completely normal to work during studies, but some people actually feel they should not be working at all during their college years.Furthermore, people who have no prior work experience have more issues with organization, commitments and hierarchies. And employers are aware of this.It is very simple really: Every new experience is hard. Past experiences help you predict what is going to happen and deal with new challenges easier. If a person has no previous experience whatsoever, he/she may experience potential anxiety and will, most probably, get familiar with the job and obliga tions later.Don’t get me wrong, I do not want to discourage candidates with absolutely no experience from applying for jobs.I rather wish to say that having a work experience, regardless of what it is, can be an extremely valuable asset, both on a resume and in practice. Therefore, if you are a student or a recent graduate, reconsider whether there is not some past experience you failed to mention.I was a waitress, a babysitter and a tutor during my studies and no, these positions weren’t directly contributing to my long-term goals. They also weren’t very prestigious either!Nevertheless, these jobs demonstrated my readiness to finance my studies and a few other qualities, such as: responsibility, communication skills, organizational skills and teaching abilities. Therefore, despite my worries about some of my friends having high-scale, prestigious internships, I still decided to mention these jobs on my first resume. There will always be someone better or more experienced than yo u. Nevertheless, you should always try to focus on your experience, your story and what you can offer to the employer.Don’t be too hard on yourself. Even employers in big and fancy companies know how hard a job of a waitress or a bartender can be and they will appreciate your effort and responsibility.Chances are they were also there once.ELABORATE ON RELEVANT EXTRACURRICULARS, HOBBIES AND SKILLSHaving my resume updated recently, someone advised me to delete my hobbies / extracurriculars (not the skills section though). To be honest, I am still thinking about it because the advice came from a person highly skilled in these matters while I personally, lean in favor of this section. I think it adds a bit of a personal touch and can make you “stand out” in the crowd. Now, I am still a recent graduate but I do have a couple of work experiences and relevant skills to put on my resume so I am a slightly different category. For those of you who do not have major work experience and are worried about what to put in there, definitely consider hobbies and extracurriculars as a separate section. It will show your interests, it will demonstrate that you manage to find time for different things and recruiters may even feel drawn to your profile owing to common interests!People tend to prefer similar people and a common hobby / interest could be a good starting point. If a recruiter shares your passion, being a semi-professional cyclist can easily be a big plusfor your application, regardless of the fact you are applying for a position of a junior accountant. It happened to me that I was chatting about my hobbies and interests on my first job interview… A recruiter asked me to elaborate my “interest in history and art” and we actually ended up discussing WW 2.This is a true story and I did ultimately get this job!Regardless of how insecure you may feel, you are not just your studies or your previous experience. Employers are generally interested about other things you can bring to the table and they love seeing someone with a wide range of interests, hobbies and ultimately, knowledge.Additional Tipp: You may want to find a bit more about a recruiter or a manager you may end up dealing with in an interview. If you can find out a few things about his/hers interests and hobbies, it may be wise to consider matching these.Of course, I would never say I like football regardless of anything. Do try to keep it real! When speaking of skills section, this one is pretty much mandatory for both, experienced professionals and entry level candidates. You will want to include both, “hard” and “soft” skills:Include anything that makes sense: languages, computer skills (esp. programming, coding, working in specific programs), driver’s license, debating skills, public speaking and writing skills etc.The more leverage you can provide, the better. If you participated in debate clubs, if you are publishing articles in the university papers or are writing a b log… Don’t be shy, put it all out there!Soft skills are also useful, and they are surely worth mentioning, especially when you have a relevant experience to back this up. This means that you should briefly elaborate why you consider yourself to be organized, flexible or inter-cultural and this is especially important in cases of candidates with little or no experience. At least think about it before an interview, recruiter will most probably ask you for examples or explanations. Therefore, both hobbies/interests and skills sections are very useful and should be used wisely by entry level candidates. What do you consider your genuine strengths are? What do you think other people would consider interesting about you? What is it about you that makes you proud other and people could consider price worthy?I always mention jogging and I proudly stress out that I ran a half-marathon.Some recruiters couldn’t care less, some love it, but most importantly, this kind of information will ra rely work against you, while at the same time, can easily work in your favor. CONSIDER ALTERNATIVE FORMATTINGApart from minding the order in your resume (education first), you may want to think about its format as well. There are specific resume formats customized for people with little or no experience. Why am I stressing formatting out?Because you can really use this to your advantage and make your resume stand out with the help of interesting templates or color use. And this can be a big advantage for junior level candidates! It can be relevant for senior level candidates as well, however, they usually manage to stand out with the help of their experience and recruiters are generally more interested in hunting them than the other way around. That is why you generally notice experienced professionals rather modest and plain resumes while junior level candidates appear to have dedicated a lot more attention to the resume looks and format. This is true and it is so for the above-mentione d reason. So, think about tricks which will help you highlight your assets not only verbally but visually as well.Furthermore, think about the company you are applying for: You may consider customizing your resume so that colors on it match the logo or official colors of the company.Of course, this shouldn’t be too obvious, but such subtle cues may trigger a subconscious impression that you are already fitting with the company’s image. Finally, while still at the beginning, you may want to keep your resume shorter, so one is fine and definitely do not write more than two A4 pages. Quality should always prevail over quantity.Give it a nice format and keep it clear and concrete.FINAL TOUCHES AND TIPPSYou should definitely pay attention to the content of your resume, but this is not the only thing you will be focusing on.As already mentioned, the resume looks can make a significant difference and basically, everything is important.Pay attention to the picture! If you decide to put it on a resume, you will want a picture to present you in the best way possible. It should be nice and professional: you should be presented on an above waist portrait with a pleasant smile, wearing a professional outfit. From my experience, investing in a resume photo done by a professional really pays off, but of course, the choice is up to you.Next thing: Pay attention to the font you choose for the text. Although, there are hundreds of fonts you can use, I think it is better to stick to conventional ones (e.g. Times new roman, Calibri, Ariel, Georgia etc.). It may not look so interesting but keeping it simple tends to be smarter.Extra Tipp: When submitting both, Cover Letter and a resume, it may be advisable to use the same font on both documents. It looks neater and demonstrates attention to detail.Extra Tipp 1: Even though you are still a beginner, do consider making a LinkedIn profile and using this tool to connect with potential recruiters and colleagues. It can be a very usefu l tool, especially when considering the importance of reference and connections by the job hunt.At the beginning, you will probably use it to just connect with university classmates and acquaintances but with time, recruiters may start approaching you.Attach your resume to your LinkedIn profile and let them notice you! Also, there are a lot of interesting articles, courses and job postings that you can check out on LinkedIn and finally, this network can help you when researching for a concrete job application. Finally, this is something rather intuitive and logical, however, it may be useful to repeat it just in case. You will need to update your resume with every relevant experience or change which happens on a professional plan… Any relevant trainings, projects or successes, make sure you include it!Also, you will want to revisit your resume with every new job application and think about what you wish to highlight and point out for that particular vacancy…Still, let us not get to o unrealistic. Rare are those who really modify a resume with every job application and especially in the case of beginners, there is really nottoo much information or experience to play with anyway…Nevertheless, do make sure to remember that your resume can and should undergo modifications, hence, that you should update it following relevant developments in your career. And my final and most important advice would be: keep it positive and do not give up! Job hunt is hard, rejections are painful, and you probably already wondered whether the whole struggle is worth it.I want to tell you that it is… Once you get where you want to be, this will all seem ridiculous and funny and you will perceive your beginner’s struggles in a different light.Keep up the confident attitude and remember that someone out there needs someone just like you and that your worth and qualities will be recognized when the time is right.Your only job is to present yourself in the best way possible and you c an start doing that right now, by drafting or updating your resume.Get to work, there are so many exciting opportunities waiting for you!

What Is the Boule in Ancient Greece

The boule was an advisory citizen body of the Athenian democracy. Members had to be over 30 and citizens could serve on it twice, which was more than other elected offices. There were either 400 or 500 members of the boule, who were selected by lot in equal number by each of the ten tribes. In Aristotles Constitution of Athens, he attributes to Draco a boule of 401 members, but Solon is generally taken as the one who started the boule, with 400. The boule had its own meeting house, the bouleterion, in the Agora. Origins of the Boule The boule changed its focus over time  so that in the 6th century B.C., the boule was not engaged in civil and criminal legislation, while it was so engaged by the 5th. It is speculated that the boule may have started as an advisory body for the navy or as a judicial body. The Boule and the Prytanies The year was divided into 10 prytanies. During each, all (50) of the councilors from the one tribe (chosen by lot from the ten tribes) served as presidents (or prytaneis). The prytanies were either 36 or 35 days long. Since the tribes were chosen at random, manipulation by the tribes was supposed to be reduced. The tholos was the dining hall in the Agora for the prytaneis. Leader of the Boule Of the 50 presidents, one was selected as chairman each day. (Sometimes he is referred to as the president of the prytaneis) He held the keys to the treasury, the archives, and the state seal. Scrutiny of Candidates One job of the boule was to determine whether candidates were fit for office. The dokimasia scrutiny included questions that may have been about the candidates family, shrines for the gods, tombs, treatment of parents, and tax and military status. The members of the boule themselves were exempt for the year from military service. Pay of the Boule In the 4th century, the councilors of the boule received 5 obols when they attended council meetings. The presidents received an extra obol for meals. The Job of the Boule The main task of the boule was to manage the agenda of the assembly, elect certain officials, and question candidates to determine whether they were fit for office. They may have had some power to imprison Athenians before trial. The boule was involved in public finances. They may also have been responsible for inspecting the cavalry and horses. They also met foreign officials. Source Christopher Blackwell,  The Council of 500: its history, The STOA project

The first strategy is keeping the lesson moving. Don’t just lecture for the whole class period. Find engaging ways to keep the students motivated. If you have a classroom of seventh grade English students, lecturing the entire class period would not benefit nor would it keep the attention of the students. Instead engaging the students with hands on activities would keep the learning process going and would alleviate some disruption in the classroom. Keeping consistency in t he classroom is another great strategy to implement in the middle school classroom. Middle school students need consistency to keep control of them. Developing and maintaining a set of classroom rules will keep disruptive students at bay. Middle STUDENT DIVERSTY AND CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT2 School classrooms need to be structured and rules need to be set and followed on an everyday basis. By keeping up with the classroom rules and never slacking will help students become responsible in their own self-discipline. When there is disruption in the classroom knowing what to do immediately will help detour any other disruptions that may occur. For instance if you have a middle school student that consistently talks during class time and is disruptive to other students, knowing what to do immediately will keep the class moving successfully. Kellie Hayden author of Top Five Classroom Management Strategies states â€Å"when students are being disruptive by talking, poking, pulling or crumpling up paper, go stand by them, this sends a direct message to stop what they are doing. Most of the time they stop and go back to work (Hayden, 2010)†. Getting to know your students is a helpful way in managing your classroom. Knowing who your students are will help you as a teacher know what is going on with your students. For example; you have a seventh grade student whose parent is terminally ill with cancer. For the past few weeks you have seen a change in attitude, and class performance in this student. The student seems withdrawn and has not turned in the past few assignments. Knowing the students family situation is helpful in knowing how to handle this situation. By knowing the students background will help in knowing if you the problem you see can be handled in the classroom by you the teacher or if you should seek outside help for your student. The last classroom strategy is probably the most important after the events that have happened this year. I think that classroom safety is very important in the learning process. If a student doesn’t feel safe in the classroom the learning process ceases. As a teacher it is important STUDENT DIVERSTY AND CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT4 hat students in your classroom feel safe and know that your classroom is secure for them to learn. With all the school shootings that have happened this past year, students all around the county have the need for safety in their home schools. As a teacher it is your responsibility to maintain a safe learning environment for your students. Keeping classroom doors locked is one way to maintain classroom safety. Not allowing objects that can be used as weapons in the classro om is another way to maintain safety. Making sure that your students know the rules of safety not only in the classroom but in the school as well will maintain the learning process and make sure that students can successfully learn. As I stated earlier there are so many strategies for classroom management and not all strategies may work in your classroom, but knowing which strategies do work and making sure that you keep a routine and consistency in the classroom will provide a successful learning environment for the students that are in your classroom and control among the students as well. Research Paper on Long-Distance Relationship Essay Example

Research Paper on Long-Distance Relationship Essay The long-distance relationship is a partnership of people whose physical home are not at the same place or close to each other. The definition of the term â€Å"long distance relationship† and the frequently used equivalent â€Å"weekend relationship† is applied inconsistently in the literature. The term â€Å"long distance relationship† can, however, be used for a special form of love relationship or relationship between two people. The long distance relationship couples are the couples who build their relationships across spatial distances. Regardless of reasons or causes for the typically separate households, there is common between all long-distance relationship couples: the relationship curve is determined by a constant change of separation time and common time. Of central importance is the self-image of the pair: long-distance relationship couples do not see themselves as â€Å"having an affair† or â€Å"a liaison† in addition to any other existing relationships, but this may be so in some cases. The exchange must go through (in the case of the weekend relationship as a form of long-distance relationship during the weekend) telecommunication or during their time together. Due to the spread of the Internet and its global communications opportunities, there are increasingly more cases of the long-distance relationships in which the partners live so far apart that their time together is reduced to a few days per year, communication through e-mail and phone and video calls to the partner to bridge the separation periods perceived by some as inadequate for a relationship. Reasons and causes for long-distance relationships have to be considered separately. Reasons may be personally motivated or be explained by profession. This contrasts with common social causes, such as expectations on the part of the labor market. â€Å"Social causes that form the platform for decisions of this type, especially to be found in educational and vocational sector. Increasing mobility requirements and changing career, which are accompanied by the expansion of education, are the most important,† writes Eva-Christina Edinger in their empirical study about long-distance romance. As a long-distance romance with the general understanding implies any relationships in which the partners see each other over short periods, for example, only on weekends. In rare cases, the long-distance relationship is not due to external circumstances, but because of the desire of the participants. The increasingly individualized lifestyle often results in individualized relationship. Couples prefer to live in separate apartments, for each can find a refuge and a personal retreat. However, only under a third of all long-distance relationship couples have this kind of relation at their will. Armenian Genocide1 essays

Armenian Genocide1 essays Why was the Armenian Genocide Forgotten? By definition genocide is the organized killing of a people for the express purpose of putting an end to their collective existence (Websters dictionary). As a rule, the organizing agent is the nation, the victim population is a domestic minority, and the end result is the near total death of a society. The Armenian genocide generally conforms to this simple definition. The Armenian genocide is a hidden, almost lost part of world history, pretty much eclipsed by the more publicized genocide of the twentieth century, the Holocaust. The question is why. I could take a poll of this room and I am willing to bet that 95% of the students have ever even heard of the Armenian Genocide and those who have couldnt tell me more than a couple sentences about it. This is pretty scary, considering the statistics of the Armenian Genocide. The Ottoman Empire was ruled by the Turks who had conquered the land from across West Asia, North Africa to Southeast Europe. The Ottoman government was based in Istanbul and was headed by a sultan who was given absolute power. The Turks were Islamic and were a harsh disciplinary civilization. The Armenians, a Christian minority, lived as second class citizens subject to legal restrictions (Graber 119). These restrictions denied them normal safeguards. Neither their lives nor their properties were guaranteed security. As non-Muslims they were also obligated to pay discriminatory taxes and denied participation in government. In its prime of the sixteenth century the Ottoman Empire was a powerful state. Its minority populations really benefited with the growth of its economy, but by the nineteenth century, the empire was in serious decline(Graber 121). It had been reduced in size and by 1914 had lost virtually all its lands in Europe and Africa. This decline created enormous internal political and economic pressures which contributed to the increasing...

A Beginners Guide to Ruby Programming Language

A Beginners Guide to Ruby Programming Language Ruby is unique among object-oriented scripting languages. In a sense, its a purists language for those who love object-oriented languages. Everything, without exception, is automatically an object, whereas in other programming languages this isnt true. What is an object? Well, in a sense you can think of it in terms of building a car. If you have a blueprint for it, then an object is whats built from that blueprint. It contains all the attributes that the object holds (i.e. make, model, color) and the actions it can perform. But, even as a pure object-oriented language, Ruby doesnt sacrifice any usability or flexibility by leaving out features that arent expressly related to object-oriented programming. Designing Ruby Rubys architect Yukihiro Matsumoto (known simply as Matz on the web) designed the language to be simple enough for beginning programmers to use while also powerful enough for experienced programmers to have all the tools theyd need. It sounds contradictory, but this dichotomy is owed to Rubys pure object-oriented design and Matzs careful selection of features from other languages such as Perl, Smalltalk, and Lisp. There are libraries for building all types of applications with Ruby: XML parsers, GUI bindings, networking protocols, game libraries and more. Ruby programmers also have access to the powerful RubyGems program. Comparable to Perls CPAN, RubyGems makes it easy to import other programmers libraries into your own programs. What Is Ruby Not? Like any programming language, Ruby has its downsides. Its not a high-performance programming language. In that regard, Pythons virtual machine design has a huge advantage. Also, if youre not a fan of the object-oriented methodology then Ruby isnt for you. Though Ruby does have some features that fall outside the realm of object-oriented languages, its not possible to create a non-trivial Ruby program without using the object-oriented features. Ruby doesnt always perform as well as other similar scripting languages in raw computing tasks. That being said, future versions will address these problems and alternate implementations, such as JRuby, are available as a workaround for these issues. How Is Ruby Used? Ruby is used in typical scripting language applications such as text processing and glue or middleware programs. Its suitable for small, ad-hoc scripting tasks that, in the past, may have been solved with Perl. Writing small programs with Ruby is as easy as importing the modules you need and writing an almost BASIC-like sequence of events type of program. Like Perl, Ruby also has first-class regular expressions, which makes text processing scripts a snap to write. The flexible syntax also aides in small scripts. With some object-oriented languages, you can get bogged down with verbose and bulky code, but Ruby leaves you free to simply worry about your script. Ruby is also suitable for larger software systems. Its most successful application is in the Ruby on Rails web framework, software which has five major subsystems, numerous minor pieces and a plethora of support scripts, database backends, and libraries. To aid the creation of larger systems, Ruby offers several layers of compartmentalization, including the class and module. Its lack of superfluous features allows programmers to write and use large software systems without any surprises. What Skills Would Be Helpful for Learning Ruby? A solid understanding of object-oriented concepts. Ruby is an object-oriented language and the object-oriented features are used throughout. Without this critical skill, youll be struggling as a Ruby programmer.A bit of functional programming knowledge. This is a plus as Ruby uses the block or closure extensively. Not having this ability isnt insurmountable, though. Creating blocks is a feature that can be learned easily enough while learning Ruby.A bit of navigational know-how. The primary way of running a Ruby script is from the command-line. Knowing how to navigate directories, run scripts and redirect input and output are essential skills to Ruby programmers. Applications and Tools Needed for Ruby The Ruby interpreterA text editor such as Notepad, Scite, or Vim. Word processors such as Wordpad or Microsoft Word are not suitable.Command-line access. Though the details of this differ from platform to platform, Linux, Windows, and OSX all have this available without any extra downloads or software installation.

European Labour Market Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 4000 words

European Labour Market - Essay Example The empirically based studies concentrate on the evolutionary models or on management literature which emphasize on the price competitiveness and the shares of the export market as an important tool in the investigation of the contribution of the strategies induced in the balancing of the costs and productivity (Aiginger, 2004). The paper will focus on different aspects of the unemployment of the Sweden and various policy implications from 1970s till date with the help of various economic theories. Unemployment in Europe from the decades of 1970s The sharp decline in the unemployment increased drastically across the globe with the crash of the Bretton Woods system of fixed exchange rates. But unlike many areas of the world, unemployment in several European countries has never returned back to the low levels during the Golden Age after the Second World War. The unemployment in the European Union is a major problem. The Euro zone members encountered high levels of unemployment rates an d it increased rapidly in the early 1970s in parallel to the consolidation of an integrated economy and its size and the complexity has been approaching as that of the USA which presents a sharp contrast (Nixson & Artis, 2007, p. 354). The hardcore explanation which stands in this way is that the growth of the industrialized economies became much more unstable and became vulnerable to frequent shocks which include oil price shocks or the exchange rate fluctuations from the period of 1970 onwards. The countries with the flexible labor market rules such as modest unemployment benefits, light employment protection legislation and a low degree of union power which are used in the management of the absorption of these shocks with a much accelerated pace with the comparison to other rigid institutions . The enhancement in the number of the unemployed in Europe can be attributed to the interaction between shocks and institutions. But it has also been encountered often that extensive unempl oyment benefits generate the problem of moral hazard where the workers receive fractional protection against unemployment and they are less likely to search jobs. People studded with strong work ethics will be finding it difficult to rely on the benefits without actively looking out for jobs while the others try to remain on the benefits as long as possible. Therefore the average values in a country have an impact on the size of the moral hazard problem and hence on the cost of providing generous unemployment benefits. Expectations will be on the countries where the workers generally posses a weaker work ethic in order to have a lower ‘replacement ratio’ which is the level of benefits relative to wages (Michau, 2009, p. 14). The employment rate is the number of the total employed and the self employed population of the working age. In the early 1960s the EU 15 the employment ratio was higher than that of the USA but it fell in the 1970s but picked up pace in the 1990 wi th falling sharply with the recession of 2008-2009 (Â  El-Agraa, 2011 p.373). In recent years defenders of the European social model proposed that capitalism augmented by a generous and interventionist welfare state which have taken the praising to Scandinavia to a sky rocketed level. The Nordic

In Which Ways and to What Extent Can GMO Products Harm Health Research Paper

In Which Ways and to What Extent Can GMO Products Harm Health - Research Paper Example On the other hand, researchers have reached a concession that there is more to genetically modified crops other than just the high productivity. In essence, these products have negative health impacts on human beings and this is something to worry about. In Japan, the consumption of wheat has increased right from the period after the Second World War and the country has failed to satisfy this demand. Therefore, the country relies on import of wheat from other nations. The concern for human health in Japan has seen the import of wheat from other countries being stopped as the controversy of genetically modified wheat becomes a reality. Evaluation of a wide range of materials reveals that genetically modified food products have both the good and bad sides of it. The website resource provides the true definition of genetically modified organism and their social economic impacts. Genetically modified organisms (GMO) refers to a wide range of plants and animals that are genetically manipu lated to provide desirable impact in productivity of Agricultural products. The motive of this scientific action is to provide the world with a better sustainable economic environment where every country can sustain its population. In many countries, this culture has helped the agricultural sector to experience a drastic shift in productivity. However, this resource also states in black and white about the negative impacts of this science that has intruded the natural agricultural style. Among the listed effects of this science is that the consumers of these food products will experience a lower nutrient level, antibiotic resistance, more cases of food allergy and poisoning. This is the impact that Japan anticipates as they continues to import wheat from other nations. In reality the resource provides an explanation for the possible reason why Japan declined import of wheat from other countries. The superiority of this resource lies in its deep coverage of the matters surrounding th e controversy of genetically modified products. Karimi (2013), a website updater, presents a rather biased GMO timeline and the historical development of this agricultural technology. The GMO matter started way back in 1935 and a slow and progressive development of the technology has made the topic a sensitive matter today. It provides a broad coverage of the legal aspect of the GMO since its first development and its acceptability in many countries today. Although the website appears to be subjective and over-scores on the negative impacts of the GMO in the society, it provides a ground to understand the proliferation of GMO culture in the world today (Greider, 26 Oct. 2003). This timeline coincides with the import culture of GMO in Japan since the time when the country’s demand for wheat increased. In Japan, the country import culture developed shortly after the Second World War (1945) and has continued to grow. This historical coverage points out to the possible period tha t Japan has suffered from the unlabeled GMO wheat until 2012 when the country became more conscious of the GMO products. The Public press channels have played a great role in asserting the public on the nature of this new technology and garnering public opinions on the matter. Strom (2013) wrote an investigative article to garner public opinions on their take on the proliferation the GMO technology and its impact on

Successful malaysian innovators and entrepreneurs

Successful malaysian innovators and entrepreneurs Introduction An innovator or pioneer in a general definition is a person or an organization which is one of the first to do something and often opens up a new area or market for others and achieves an innovation. Meanwhile an entrepreneur is an individual who own a new enterprise, venture or idea and took calculated risk for a good output. Entrepreneur in English is a term applied to the type of character who is willing to take risk and taking chances in a new venture or enterprise and accepts full responsibility for the outcome. A French economist, Jean-Baptiste Say is believed to have coined the word entrepreneur in the 1800. Innovator and entrepreneur do not share the same meaning but indeed, there is a significant relationship between innovator and entrepreneur. A person can be an innovator and entrepreneur at the same time. In Malaysia, there are many innovators and entrepreneurs that manage to gain recognition at the international stage. Most of the entrepreneurs manage to achieve the success by running businesses that sell either products or services. Those successful people are Tony Fernandes, Tan Sri Robbert Kuok and Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar. However, some of them do not get fame by running business. They would think out of the box and be innovative. Some of the successful innovators are Eric Leong, Jimmy Choo and Tan Sri Lim Kok Wing. Their creativity in certain aspects such as interior design, shoes design and knowledge of designing let the whole world see them. Among all these successful local innovators and entrepreneurs, they have their own ways to achieve success. Every one of them goes through different path of life. He likes to donate and contribute. He does not have the desire to keep all the wealth for his wife and children. Money will not last. He believes in Karma. Its not money that will protect him but what he is doing now. Theres no secret for success. Syed Mokhtar is only a human being that created by god but the difference is his way of getting mature. He believes that whoever will success if they really work hard for it. It may take some time. There will no short cut for success. There is reason why he works as if there is no tomorrow. Social and society issues are one of the reasons. He wants to make sure that the heritage would last long enough for my next generation. He knows his own strengths and weaknesses. He would ask for help from the other people when he is unable to do it. He go through the hard way but that is the right way. He has nothing at the beginning. However he will learn what he does not know, asks help from the others. He does not feel ashamed for that because he is not stealing. He works on his own. The attitude of being lazy and shame should be changed. He thinks that a person has to be patience and put more effort in order to run a business successfully. He keeps on searching for opportunities and business so that he can keep on helping the others to excel. He is not doing this solely for himself but for everyone. For him, God will only help those who are willing to work hard. Determination, hardworking and never give up easily are his keys in achieving success. Conclusion In a nutshell, everybody have an equal chance to be successful. Nothing can stop us from being successful unless it is you. If you want to achieve something, you have to work for it. We should follow what Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar Al-Bukhary did in order to gain a wealth for now and here after. He will not forget his own root and keep on helping those who need helps. To be a successful businessman, I think you really need to brush all your senses every morning, just as you brush your teeth. I coined the phrase honing your senses in business: your vision, hearing, sense of smell, touch and taste. All these senses come in very useful [9]. The fourth factor is his way of hiring workers. Robert Kuok hires his workers wisely and he always remembers to acknowledge them. He has never forgets the contributions of all of his colleagues and employee. He even thanked his very first batch of workers personally in hisKuok Groups 60th Anniversary speech. Robert Kuok is very particular in hiring workers. According to him, honesty, hardworking and intelligence are the main criteria that he looks for. When I look candidates in the eye, they must appear very honest to me. I do not look for MBAs or exceptional students. You may hire a brilliant man, summa cum laude, first-class honours, but if his mind is not a fair one or if he has a warped attitude in life, does brilliance really matter? [10]said Robert Kuok. Being humble is a reason that made Robert Kuok a successful man. He has been very humble all this while as he always remembers that once a person is arrogant, the person guard will be lowered. As a result, the person is defeated easily by his rivals. Robert Kuok is very alert with every step he has taken. Most of us will think that if we can capitalize a field, we shall receive a great outcome. However, according to Robert Kuok, sometime capitalism will leads to destruction if we do not inspect it well. He said that Capitalism needs to be inspected under a magnifying glass once a day, a super-magnifying glass once a week, and put through the cleaning machine once a month.[10] He also said that we cannot let greed controls us. Once this happens, the result may be fatal. At the end of the day, despite all the success Robert Kuok has made, he always makes it a point to repay the society. He had set up a foundation called the Kuok Foundation to help out students that are facing financial problem in order to pursue their studies. He even gives out scholarships to students who are studying in either private or public universities. The Kuok family firmly believed in its social responsibility to share its wealth and good fortune with the less fortunate. [11] Achievements Robert Kuok has managed to win several awards for his success in his lifetime. He was honored on the Forbess Worlds Billionaire list, ranking at a respectable number 33. He has also earned the title as Tan Sri in Malaysia. The noblest achievement by Robert Kuok is arguably the Kuok Foundation that was established by the Kuok family. The philanthropists vision is to alleviate poverty and reduce the economic disparities between the rich and poor communities in Malaysia.
